Hospice philosophy affirms life and offers dignity and hope through the provision of their Specialist Palliative Care Service. Their vision is for everyone living in Southland to have access to the highest quality palliative care. Hospice run a six bed In-Patient Unit, but also care for around 120 patients in the community. Hospice' palliative care focuses on enhancing peoples quality of life, while responding to each patients physical, emotional and spiritual needs (part of this involves maintaining their beautiful gardens).

As you can possibly imagine, family life is deeply affected when a loved one has a life-limiting illness, so support for families is also an intrinsic part of Hospice care.

As a Hospice Gardener you will:

  • Work alone or alongside another
  • Pruning the rose beds and clearing the leaf litter
  • Engage in some weeding activities
  • Perform some light tidying tasks

Volunteers will gain:

  • Initial orientation
  • The appreciation of Hospice Southland Staff and Residents
  • The knowledge that they are serving their community by keeping the garden looking beautiful.


  • Enjoys serving the community
  • Wants to use/develop their green fingers
  • Loves keeping gardens tidy
  • Pruning of the rose beds and removing leaf litter involved
  • Gardening tasks may involve: bending, kneeling, twisting, clasping, pushing and some light lifting
  • Basic general knowledge of garden plants a bonus. I.e. Is this a plant or a weed!?
  • Tools available onsite - you can bring your own gloves if you prefer

(Please wear suitable footwear and bring a hat, sun protection and something to drink)

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

Flexible: Your choice: Monday - Sunday Am/Pm and/or 5/6 weekly Working Bees for 2 hours at a time.
