Organisation:

Presbyterian Support Otago

Category:

Practical Help

Hours:

Both/Flexible

Locations:

Dunedin

Please note, Presbyterian Support Otago’s volunteer coordinator is on annual leave from 18 December 2023 – 22 January 2024. They will respond to your volunteer enquiry late January. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Situated on a sunny site in South Dunedin, the compassionate and experienced staff of St Andrews are people-focused and take pride in providing care with dignity and respect. Activities staff run an innovative activities programme six days a week.

Activities assistant volunteers work alongside staff, engaging residents in conversation and encouraging and supporting them to join in with activities like dominos, bingo, art, music and helping staff to prepare and serve afternoon tea.

Residents love chatting and having a laugh with volunteers who bring a little bit of the outside world in with them, making conversation about things happening in the community, places you have been, and things you have done or noticed. You might spend time reading the paper or books, going for walks in the garden, or just chatting and laughing with residents.

  • You will receive a full orientation and training.
  • You will always be working alongside staff.
  • No two days are the same, 2 hours goes very fast and is incredibly rewarding.
  • St Andrews is a hospital level aged care facility, consists of 3 units each with 26 residents.

They hope volunteers will enjoy making a difference in somebody's life whilst developing their own interpersonal skills. Volunteers get the opportunity to gain an insight into elder care, meet new people, establish new friendships and have fun. Experience 'helper's high' a rush of euphoria and the release of endorphins that is a result of volunteering!
