Whanau Awhina Plunket is a non-profit national organisation whose people are passionately committed to the well-being of children and their families. Plunket support families to ensure children reach their full potential in the first 5 years of life. Services available include parenting advice and support, child health promotion and health education.

Invercargill Plunket have a community garden onsite that needs love and care. Currently, children and parents are encouraged to interact with the garden during messy play, but it would be great to have a regular time where families can come and learn the basics of garden care. If you are a keen gardener, there are 2 ways you can support them:

Community Garden Group Facilitator:

  • Share your gardening knowledge and inspire the next generation of both parents and children
  • Create a hands on learning environment with our tamariki weeding, digging, planting and tasting the produce.
  • If there is an abundance of produce, then sharing what is grown with our community will also be key to their learning.
  • You will be supported by the Invercargill Community Services Coordinator in developing a plan and the ongoing operation of the group.

Help with garden maintenance:

  • Apply your gardening skills to help Plunket maintain this community garden
  • Do not necessarily have to be keen on teaching children/parents if you prefer to potter away independently
  • Ensure the garden remains in good shape throughout the year

The garden is beside the playground so this group would be a great mix of families being able to learn and also relax- which would contribute to their overall wellbeing! Plunket values volunteers who share their knowledge and gifts in various roles and they are keen to engage volunteers when they are available and in the capacity that they feel most comfortable giving their time. All materials and supplies will be provided within the budget.

Requirements

  • Be able to work with materials and supplies provided
  • Have gardening knowledge
  • Enjoy contributing to the health and wellbeing of local young families

If keen on leading the group, it would be essential that you:

  • enjoy our under 5's
  • create a fun and exciting learning space
  • have an interest in supporting young parents
  • be able to share your knowledge clearly with families
  • Our little people are naturally curious, so not minding if the odd vegetable is harvested super early is also important!
  • Depending on your level of involvement you will be happy to submit your details for either a MoJ check or a Police check.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

  • This can be tailored to your availability - potentially monthly or more frequently.
  • A regular time would be great if there is growing interest from families.
  • Most groups are run within Plunket opening hours, but there is a possibility that this could be done during the weekend.
