North Otago RDA is a not-for-profit organisation with the core purpose of improving confidence, independence & wellbeing for people experiencing physical, intellectual, emotional or mental health challenges through riding and horse related activities.

They are offering the opportunity to work with horses whilst enjoying the satisfaction of helping their riders. They need your help to run the riding sessions: no previous experience with horses or people with disabilities is necessary as training is given. All volunteers follow NZRDA standardised training programmes to achieve the required proficiency.

Volunteers are required to support riders by way of either leading a horse or walking beside them, following directions/instructions from the duty coach.

Duties include:

  • Assisting riders to get ready prior to getting on the horse.
  • Helping to get the horse ready with the required equipment.
  • Lead the horse while the rider undertakes his/her programme.
  • Walk beside each rider to assist with the riders’ position or helping with any equipment.

Requirements

They are looking for people who:

  • Are able to listen and follow instructions.
  • Like children and horses
  • Like working together with a team
  • Punctuality
  • Willingness to learn and able to share ideas.
  • Reasonably fit and able to walk or jog alongside a horse for short amounts of time
  • Are empathetic and have a sense of humour

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

Sessions are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays during term time. Volunteers required from 8.30am until 12pm and 12.45pm to 3.15pm. Attendance each week preferred, and volunteers can help during part of or full session.
