The Salvation Army Community Garden on Dunstan Rd grows produce for the community and they need help with maintaining 8 large plots, and provide affordable vegetables for anyone who needs them! They are in the process of setting up an orchard area, and in the winter months, they also chop up firewood for distribution in the community - which helps them raise funds for garden maintenance supplies and operations.

Whether you've got a green thumb or just want get outside, get active and help your community- all volunteers are welcome! More hands mean more efficient operations for the garden. This is an opportunity to contribute to an essential service to those in need in the community.

A little bit about the role:

  • No gardening experience necessary, as you will be given a health & safety briefing and orientation by the garden manager, Brian
  • All tools are provided, but bring your own gardening gloves as they may not have your size
  • Drive yourself to the location, or carpool from Salvation Army branch available
  • Help with whatever tasks you feel most confident and comfortable with
  • Meet people within the community while helping a great cause
  • Opportunity to connect with other volunteers over morning tea al fresco

Requirements

  • Friendly and happy to work in a team
  • Reliable and punctual
  • Enjoy working outside and getting in the dirt
  • Have a genuine interest in community service
  • Complete Salvation Army Volunteer Application Process incl. MoJ check

A Ministry of Justice background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

  • Garden is open 9a-12p Mon-Fri
  • Pop in once a week, or more, or less- flexibility available

Volunteer South's office is closed from Friday 20th December until Monday January 6th. Many organisations listing roles online will also be taking a break.
