Fertility New Zealand walks alongside all people facing fertility challenges. One in four New Zealanders will be affected by infertility during their lifetime. It is a life crisis, representing a threat to people's plans, identity, hopes and dreams. The Dunedin team is growing and are seeking additional volunteers to help share the responsibilities.
As a Support Volunteer you will:
- Offer much needed support in a group setting
- Dramatically change the experience of infertility for people
- Lighten the load by reducing feelings of isolation
- Help facilitate peer support connections
- Engage in positive, constructive dialogue
- Be fulfilled by making a huge difference for individuals in crisis
Key duties include:
- Organising (in conjunction with the Support Coordinator) and co-facilitating support groups on a six-weekly basis
- Communicating with existing attendees as necessary
- Maintaining Facebook communications and accept/decline new members
- Maintaining a positive, empathetic and professional attitude towards members
- Responding promptly to support meeting enquiries via email
- Reporting the monthly attendance to the Support Coordinator
- Close working relationship with the Support Coordinator
Requirements
This opportunity would suit people who have experienced infertility and have completed their fertility journey with or without children. It is important that your vision aligns with Fertility NZ’s mission to support people experiencing the rigours of fertility challenges.
Key skills and competencies include:
- Ability to bring people together in a positive, empathetic and nurturing environment
- Ability to lead meetings within a positive and encouraging culture
- Clear and empathetic written and verbal communication style
- Ability to stay calm when members are stressed or upset
- Ability to listen
Training and Support:
- Our online training hub allows volunteers to watch training videos and read policies
- In-person training is a requirement and is held in Auckland.
- Fertility New Zealand covers all training expenses.
- We also have a private Facebook group for our volunteers to connect with other volunteers.
Time commitment
- The Dunedin Support group meets once every six weeks (Wednesday evenings 6:30-9:30pm) between February to November.
- You will need to devote between 2-4 hours a month to facilitate and administrate the group.
Training:
- Sometime in August/September, there will be a one-day training on a Saturday. You will need to travel on a Friday and return on a Sunday, all expenses are paid.
- Online training is very flexible, there is a series of short, pre-recorded videos to watch in your own time. At the moment there are only 6 videos to watch ranging between 3 and 25 minutes long.
