The Special Olympics was founded in 1968, its purpose is to enrich the lives of people with intellectual disabilities through sport. Their vision is to ensure that people with intellectual disabilities in Aotearoa are valued. The Special Olympics movement has grown from a few hundred athletes to more than 3.7 million athletes in over 170 countries in all regions of the world, providing year-round sports training, athletic competition and other related programs.
Bocce is a sport that is a cross between Bowls and Petanque. It's a Special Olympics New Zealand sport and they love it! Bocce is a really easy game to learn and play. They have a dedicated group of Special Olympics athletes in Balclutha that train and play during the summer months
