Outdoor Instructor

Journeys Charitable Trust

Youth & Children

Journeys Central Otago's vision is for all young women to be connected, confident and inspired. In their words, they do that by "connecting with ourselves, others and wild places; developing ourselves through adventure and challenge and growing to know and value who we are"

What the instructor role involves:

  • Adventures with a group of girls in the evenings
  • Creating a welcoming and supportive group atmosphere
  • Being a role model for authenticity, passion for adventure and staying safe in the outdoors
  • Managing the safety of the group and teaching outdoor skills

Training, support and upskilling:
Journeys understand that everyone has different experience levels and make sure instructors have the support they need. As a volunteer you will:

  • have comprehensive induction and training
  • initially be paired with someone more experienced
  • have awesome training opportunities like bike skills courses, navigation clinics, self leadership sessions, outdoor first aid etc.
They also have relationships with outdoor suppliers for discounted gear.

They want you to Journey with them if you are an inspiring and ordinary Central Otago wahine (woman) who..

  • Has experience in, and is stoked on having outdoor adventures
  • Genuinely respects and enjoys being with young people
  • Appreciate the awesomeness youth contribute to our community
  • Wants to contribute to an increase in women and girls adventuring outdoors in our local wild places

For biking instructors:

  • Can ride up and down a track such as rock garden/poo track (not necessarily getting all the bits, but you have heaps of fun on these)
  • Can comfortably ride or walk for 2 hours including hills
  • Have your own well maintained bike and required outdoor gear
  • Are available to attend their annual training days (March and September)
  • Have or will make time to get a 1 day first aid certificate (Journeys will pay)

A Police background check is required for this role.
