What the instructor role involves:

  • Adventures with a group of girls in the evenings
  • Creating a welcoming and supportive group atmosphere
  • Being a role model for authenticity, passion for adventure and staying safe in the outdoors
  • Managing the safety of the group and teaching outdoor skills

Training, support and upskilling:
Journeys understand that everyone has different experience levels and make sure instructors have the support they need. As a volunteer you will:

  • have comprehensive induction and training
  • initially be paired with someone more experienced
  • have awesome training opportunities like bike skills courses, navigation clinics, self leadership sessions, outdoor first aid etc.
    They also have relationships with outdoor suppliers for discounted gear.

Requirements

They want you to Journey with them if you are an inspiring and ordinary Central Otago wahine (woman) who..

  • Has experience in, and is stoked on having outdoor adventures
  • Genuinely respects and enjoys being with young people
  • Appreciate the awesomeness youth contribute to our community
  • Wants to contribute to an increase in women and girls adventuring outdoors in our local wild places

For biking instructors:

  • Can ride up and down a track such as rock garden/poo track (not necessarily getting all the bits, but you have heaps of fun on these)
  • Can comfortably ride or walk for 2 hours including hills
  • Have your own well maintained bike and required outdoor gear
  • Are available to attend their annual training days (March and September)
  • Have or will make time to get a 1 day first aid certificate (Journeys will pay)

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

There are a few options:

Regular Instructors

  • 5:30pm - 7:30pm (Wednesday or Thursdays)
  • for 12 weeks over Winter for On Foot
  • 12 weeks over Spring/Summer for biking

Casual/fill in - They call you when they need you
