The Meals on Wheels Association Invercargill Inc. is a voluntary organisation primarily involved in delivering midday meals to the more vulnerable people in our local community. These include elderly, infirm, or those unable to cook for themselves for some reason or other. This is an essential service to ensure the health and wellbeing of people in need of nutritious meals.
They are looking for someone to take over from the current roster coordinator, so that their operations can carry on smoothly and continue to provide this valuable service to the Invercargill community.
How the roster operates:
- There is a roster of regular drivers covering 7 different routes in the Invercargill area.
- There are some very loyal regular drivers who deliver on the same route each week, or sometimes each
fortnight.
- They also have a list of volunteers they can call upon when the regulars are unable to make their shift.
- Meals are delivered Monday to Friday except for Public Holidays, all year round.
As the roster coordinator your usual routine will be as follows:
- Review the weekly roster in advance, and confirm driver availability via phone calls.
- Receive a daily email from the programme coordinator with delivery details for the day and any special instructions.
- The regularly rostered drivers will collect their respective bags and delivery lists from Kew Hospital kitchen and go about their route.
- Occasionally, there are special requests outside of the covered area and this might require some coordination with the driver on the nearest route.
- If there are any issues or problems with the deliveries, drivers contact you and you would liaise with the programme coordinator.
- Some routes are taken care of by community groups or businesses, and these groups often take breaks over school holidays, which is when the role can be busier, as you may need to make a few extra phone calls to fill the gaps in the roster.
- On other occasions, where drivers can't make their shifts due to sickness or holiday, you will need to contact the volunteer list to fill those gaps.
- You may need to remind fill-in drivers via call/text the night before to confirm.
You will be given a detailed orientation and instructions from the current roster coordinator, who will ensure you have all the information you need to fulfil this role.
If you are keen to get involved, and have a few hours to spare each week, Meals on Wheels welcomes you to be a part of their volunteer team.
