Family Works Emergency Foodbank is run by Presbyterian Support Otago, and is located at 407 Moray Place. It is the busiest foodbank in Dunedin and supports the wider Otago region. Foodbank volunteers are the unseen heroes of the foodbank, putting together up to 400 food parcels each month, and counting, sorting and stacking .

Volunteers support the foodbank by:

  • Counting and record donations
  • Sorting and storing donations
  • Unloading and carrying bulk donations
  • Breaking down bulk donations into smaller quantities
  • Preparing individual and family emergency food parcels
  • Managing and moving stock from storage areas to the pantry
  • Assisting with Foodbank events
  • Follow instructions and processes set out by staff

Training and support: You will receive a full orientation and training, and you will always be working alongside the foodbank coordinator during the training period.

Your time makes an immediate impact for people struggling with the rising cost of living and find themselves in need of the emergency Foodbank. Volunteers are an integral part of the foodbank which is part of the wider wrap-around services Family Works provides across the Otago region. Volunteers are supported by the Foodbank Coordinator. Due to limited space, volunteers need to be able to work independently and safely. This is not a direct client facing role.

Requirements

This role will suit someone who is:

  • Up for a physical challenge; capable of lifting heavy donations and pushing trolleys
  • Comfortable standing for long periods, bending, twisting, and working in small spaces
  • Friendly, reliable, and trustworthy with good interpersonal skills
  • Enjoys working in a team and can follow instruction
  • Able to commit to a weekly roster
  • Willing to sign the Code of Conduct
  • Police check and references required

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

Between 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday, or be available for casual shifts.
Shifts are minimum 2–3 hours per week.
Preference for volunteers to commit on a weekly basis for minimum 12 month period.
Casual volunteers are also welcome to apply.
