The Salvation Army in Queenstown provides a number of services that strengthen the local community including family wellbeing programs, mental health support, as well as food security. At the Family Store on Gorge Rd, they run a Community Pantry, where donated food is set up in supermarket style, for members of the community to come and 'shop' for what they need.

Helpers are needed to assist on Tuesdays and Wednesdays:

  • Stocking shelves
  • Weighing donated goods
  • Sorting through donated items for quality and Best Before date checking
  • Setting up the community pantry
  • Rotating the foodbank stock

These simple tasks are essential in creating a dignified environment for people struggling with meeting everyday needs to access adequate and nutritious foods. You will enjoy working with the caring and supportive team of staff and volunteers at The Salvation Army, and learn about the various ways in which the organisation provides key support services in the region.

Requirements

Ideally you are someone who:

  • Has a genuine interest in helping those in need
  • Is tolerant of diversity and varied backgrounds - Added bonus if you speak Portuguese, Spanish, Mandarin, Filipino or other languages
  • Has an understanding of and respect for confidentiality
  • Is happy to work within a team and take on varied tasks
  • Can comfortably move around and stay on their feet for a couple of hours
  • Has reasonable physical strength to be able to lift crates of produce/dairy
  • Would need to complete some Salvation Army Volunteer paperwork including an Ministry of Justice check

A Ministry of Justice background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

Choose shift day and length per your flexibility

  • Ideally you can help for a minimum of 1-2 hrs
  • Tue 10am-2pm or Wed 10am-2pm
