Otago Youth Wellness Trust provides the Attendance Service (for 6 to 16 year olds) in Dunedin City and also provides one-one-one casework support to rangatahi aged between 11 and 18 with high and multiple needs. As a charity they are not fully funded and need, and want, to engage the community where they can with what they do best.
There are two roles that will help them on several levels:
1) Someone to help keep the garden productive and enabling rangatahi to learn and engage in a meaningful way
2) Someone to help keep the cars clean - they provide a mobile service and at times, help rangatahi to learn how to clean cars
As OYWT’s Green-Fingered Gardener you would:
- Keep an eye on the garden beds – we have six raised boxes and a herb garden and several fruit trees
- Ensure the gardens have a seasonal planting plan that they can engage rangatahi in
- If possible, from time to time guide rangatahi on the planting and caring for plants
- Liaise with caseworkers to outline the garden planting plans
- Regular support with weeding and re-mulching/composting etc
As OYWT’s Conscientious Car Cleaner you would:
- Clean, inside and out, two cars a week if possible
- From time to time guide young people helping with car cleaning and help them learn great skills
- OYWT provides all the cleaning gear and equipment
Training/Skills Gained:
- OYWT would ensure you were properly supported in any interaction with rangatahi
- OYWT would hope you bring good skills and knowledge to the roles
The benefits of the role:
- Helps the organisation continue to provide the highest standard of support to rangatahi
- Having these jobs completed, helps them to focus on their frontline work, which benefits the young people and whānau they work with
- You will have a sense of satisfaction in helping in a small way to support the mahi they do
- Having the garden operating well provides the opportunity for young people to learn how to grow, harvest and enjoy fresh food
(These are skills they will carry with them throughout their lives)
Requirements
- Someone with a love of gardening who wants to pass on their knowledge and skills
- It is not a heavy lifting job, though from time to time they will need to replenish the garden beds
- One to several hours per week, depending on how you would like to interact with their young people and staff
- The car cleaning role needs someone meticulous as they transport young people in the vehicles all the time
(They want rangatahi to have a good experience – this means clean and hygienic spaces)
- Both roles require someone with patience and a desire to be supportive and share their knowledge and skills
A Police background check is required for this role.
Time commitment
- Car cleaning – mainly Monday 1pm - 3pm
(Other times may also be possible but that is the key availability required)
- Gardening – as and when needed - depending on the season and the needs of the garden
- They would love you to stay with them as long as you can in terms of length of service
