Organisation:

Cromwell Community House

Category:

Food Services

Hours:

Both/Flexible

Locations:

Cromwell

Cromwell Community House are coordinating a Food Security Network to ensure all locals have access to adequate and nutritious food. They work with other local organisations who support people in need. One part of this program is to try and harvest the plentiful fruit on trees on residential properties in the community, so much of which often goes to waste. They are keen to recruit volunteers to locate and harvest fruit from trees in the Cromwell, Bannockburn and Mt. Pisa area.

How it works:

  • You get in touch with CCH and express your interest
  • You can either pick fruit, assist with collection, or help with preserving the fruit
  • If picking fruit, you will receive a map or directions to locations of fruit trees
  • Trees are on private property so you will be given specific guidelines around this
  • Homeowners may keep the fruit or choose to donate it
  • Crates will be provided to you if you are picking fruit
  • If you are helping with collection you will be given directions on where to collect and drop off
  • If you are keen to help with preserving, you might be invited along to a working bee or be able to grab some jars and DIY at home. This process can be discussed.

Why volunteer to harvest:

  • Enjoy working in the fresh air while helping a great cause
  • Learn about sustainable food practices
  • Get to know your neighbourhood if you are new!
  • Contribute to the food security of your community
  • Volunteer whenever it best fits your schedule
  • Enjoy being part of a volunteer team of like-minded individuals
  • Whatever step you are involved in, you make a difference!

Requirements

  • Some level of physical fitness to reach up into trees, carry boxes of fruit, use a ladder etc. (pickers only)
  • Some knowledge of your neighbourhood, but maps/directions will be provided if you are new!
  • A genuine interest in helping your community
  • Willing to sign a code of conduct as you will be going onto private properties

Time commitment

  • Help when you are able to, flexible to your availability.
  • Anytime from now until early-February
