Alzheimers Otago provides post-diagnostic support for those who experience this life-limiting condition. The Minds in Motion (MiM) programme delivers Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) and is designed to assist those with mild to moderate dementia. The goal of CST is to help participants maintain quality of life, allowing affected individuals to remain in their own home for as long as possible. The programme is designed to assist those with mild to moderate dementia to build confidence and independence and maintain quality of life and provide much needed respite time for care partners.
As a Minds in Motion Assistant, you will:
- Support the MiM Activities Coordinator to provide fun and meaningful sessions.
- Oversee and assist session participants with basic activities and tasks (6 in a group).
- Help tailor activities to the ability of those attending on the day (shooting hoops, playing skittles, preparing food in kitchen, creative activities, music).
- Engage in friendly, positive, casual conversation about current events and the past.
- Helping with setup and pack-down.
Training provided:
- All relevant training will be provided via induction and by the certified CST Coordinator.

Requirements
- Caring, kind, understanding and patient.
- Need to be able to assist participants with light activities (no personal cares).
- Able to throw and catch a ball and have a willingness to give things a go.
- Experience with those living with dementia or older persons an advantage.
- Experience delivering group activities would be ideal but not essential.
- Need own transport to get to the venues.
- Complete relevant induction training provided.
- Ideally, a minimum 6-month commitment.
A Police background check is required for this role.
Time commitment
Dunedin:
- 2 hours per programme, 2 sessions per week over 7 weeks (can commit to 1 or 2 programmes per week)
- Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings
- February to November
- 10am - 12pm
Queenstown:
- 4 hours per programme, 1 session per week, over 7 weeks
- Tuesday
- April - November
- 10am - 2pm
