The Oamaru Steam and Rail Restoration Society are a volunteer group that is dedicated to maintaining and running vintage trains around Oamaru's famous Victorian Precinct and Harbour. The train operates every Sunday and during special events. For example, during the Victorian Heritage weekend in mid-November and at the Christmas and New Year Holiday break. Their train is also available for hire for film-making or for the next event!
Could you be the Engineering Manager they're looking for? The Engineering Manager will help to guide the team in adopting best practices while upholding the culture of the societies historical roots. This role provides the chance to ensure that the OSRRS continues to run well into the future.
As Engineering Manager you will:
- Overseeing volunteers and workshop activities/operations
- You will need to work in with the volunteers
- Compliance: You will be keeping a record of activities and persons working on various projects
- You'll be reporting to General Manager
- Upholding best practice processes within the teams to maintain high-quality safety
- Helping to create a culture of transparency, trust, learning, development and improvement
- You'll be providing advice, guidance and support to the teams
- Helping to establish plans while growing volunteers from within
- Identifying areas of risk and managing these proactively
Their workshop is staffed on Wednesdays and Saturdays by an enthusiastic group of volunteers who maintain the train lines and rolling stock. Join the team if you would like to look around the workshop or join in the fun.

Requirements
- A kind, smart, genuine and firm personality with a safety mindset
- Would suit a retired person with previous engineering experience
- You possess a technical background, preferably at a Senior Engineer level
- You can demonstrate a successful track record in building, leading, and inspiring technical teams
- You demonstrate adaptability and willingness to embrace change in a dynamic environment
- You possess strong verbal communication abilities, being able to oversee multiple tasks simultaneously
- Suggest new innovative ways to improve safety
- You'll be passionate about building a strong confident team that loves to deliver fun recreational experiences
- You have a positive impact on the culture
A Police background check is required for this role.
Time commitment
- 12 hours per week (6 hrs on a Wednesday and 6 hrs on a Saturday)
- Ideally a 12 month plus commitment
