Youth Settlement Volunteers help Settlement Youth Workers with events that support young people with a refugee background in their settlement journey. These events provide vital opportunities for young people to build connections with others and their communities. Events may include workshops, sharing kai, and sports days. Youth Settlement volunteers empower rangatahi within safe environments, by helping to create spaces where young people can thrive.

As a Youth Settlement volunteer, you may also be helping young people to navigate everyday challenges and adapt to life in Aotearoa New Zealand. Volunteers commit to support at least two events a term for two terms or more.

As a Youth Settlement Volunteer you will be:

  • Providing supervision for children and young people at 2 or more events per year
  • Helping to create a welcoming and inclusive spaces for young people through community-based activities
  • Supporting the positive development of young people who contribute to their whānau, community and the world

Requirements

  • Passion to develop and support young people in their journey
  • Openness to working with people from refugee backgrounds
  • Some understanding or experience of youth work (desirable, but not required)
  • Driver’s licence (desirable, but not required)
  • Two referees for character checks

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

  • This is a Short-Term, Flexible role: Volunteers commit to support at least two events a term for two terms or more
  • Initial training: Approx. 8 hrs and includes a face-to-face session on a Saturday and an online module
