Youth Leader roles - Southland District

St John Youth have a team of 900+ volunteer youth leaders that deliver their youth programmes across the country. Their youth leaders come from a wide range of backgrounds and offer a range of skills, it's not all just about First Aid!

Youth Leaders develop young people by teaching skills, providing challenges and overseeing the delivery of St John Youth programmes. They also make a huge difference to the development of young people by acting as a coach and mentor for various aspects of their life such as helping map a future career or setting personal goals.

St John Youth in the Southland areas of Motupohue (Bluff), Hokonui (Gore), Murihiku (Invercargill), and Winton are needing volunteers in the following roles:

Youth Leader
Volunteering as a Youth Leader will see you responsible for delivering a high-quality Youth Programme at your local Division, including planning, resourcing, delivery and assessing. Ultimately the aim is to ensure all activities are safe yet loaded with fun and adventure for all participants, whilst taking care to ensure they are in line with Hato Hone St John policy. Their Youth Leaders also provide leadership, mentoring and support to Divisional Non-commissioned officers (NCO's), and encourage maximum participation in district and regional activities.

Relief Leader
Similar to that of a Youth Leader, their Relief Leaders are also responsible for the delivery of a high-quality Youth Programme at Divisions - but, on an as needed basis. They also provide leadership, mentoring and support to NCO’s when supporting Divisions, events, camps or functions.
As this volunteer role is on an 'as needed basis', the role sits within a District rather than a specific Division which means the Division in which you attend may not be same one each time - however, it will be within your District and therefore close to where you live.

Project Volunteer
Providing support on the delivery of long or short-term projects across the Youth Programme for the Region and Districts, this Project Volunteer role could be as a subject matter expert (SME), advisory or for development purposes. These projects may see you leading programmes and/or projects of work which could include things such as camps, competitions, events and / or special interest groups. You will also be required to provide leadership, mentoring and support to Youth Members and NCO's who may also be working on the same project.

The benefits of being a Youth Leader with St John:

  • Seeing young people grow to realise their potential, and knowing that you have been a key part to that growth is a very powerful feeling and makes it all worthwhile.
  • Youth Leaders often experience a rapid development in their own skills such as leadership, managing people, communication, planning, understanding young people - as well as practical skills in health and medical emergencies.
  • By joining such a large team of sociable people, our leaders often form lifelong friendships across the country.
  • There are also the added bonuses of helping out in your local community and enjoying the member benefits of being part of St John.
