QT Community CATs is a volunteer-led organisation, that supports the local community with desexing, microchipping/registering assistance, cat care education, and taking in and caring for surrendered or abandoned cats and kittens. They also run community outreach and wellbeing including offering companion cats as emotional support pets.

If you're looking to get involved in the animal care aspect of operations, there are 2 volunteer opportunities available.

Cat Carer at HQ
In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining a clean, safe and enriching environment for the cats while also providing companionship and socialisation opportunities. Key duties include

  • feeding
  • litter maintenance
  • cleaning of their spaces
  • general care
  • monitoring their behaviour and well-being.

Fostering in your own home
In this role, you would provide temporary care for the cats, until they are ready for adoption. Key duties include:

  • basic care such as feeding, watering and grooming
  • monitoring of their health reporting back any concerns to the rescue
  • helping the cats to adjust to home environments by providing companionship and playtime
  • training and enrichment
All necessary equipment is provided to you including food and litter and continued support throughout the process.

In both roles, you will play a vital role for the cats' wellbeing, so they are able to lead happy and healthy lives as pets. You will enjoy learning about various aspects of cat care and behaviour, and of course, enjoy lots of cuddles and purrs! Pets bring joy to the people and families they go to, so this role ultimately improves community wellbeing as well.

You will be supported by the QT Community CATs team as needed in both roles, so don't hesitate to reach out even if you don't have experience.

Requirements

For both roles:

  • a kind and caring nature
  • enjoy being around animals, especially cats.
As long as you can offer care and love for the cats, they would feel right at home.

For Fostering:

  • Cats and kittens can go into many different home life situations such as homes with children of all ages, homes with other cats and homes with dogs.
  • You can go to HQ and choose the right cat(s) for you and your family to foster
  • Need a home with the ability to keep the cat or kitten contained in one quiet room for around 48 hours maximum. Once they feel more comfortable, you can let them explore your house.
  • QT Community CATs will provide pop up pens for this purpose.

Time commitment

Cat Care:

  • How much time you give is your choice as long as all of the necessary jobs from the checklist are completed.
  • You are more than welcome to stick around after and have cuddles with the cats for as long as you like.
  • Morning shifts begin at 10 am while evening shifts are usually 4 pm onwards.

Fostering happens in your home so will be throughout the day as per your availability and the cat's needs. For support, QT community CATs is open from 9 am until 6 pm, but core team members are also on call if you need any assistance or have concerns.
