Chairperson | Sustainable Queenstown

Sustainable Queenstown is a well-established local charity dedicated to promoting environmental sustainability, particularly waste reduction, through activating, connecting and championing our community.

The charity's key initiatives are monthly Green Drinks community events, DISHrupt reusable serveware for event hire, Resourceful Communities in collaboration with Wastebusters (Repair Revolution events, Low Waste Living workshops, Plastic Free July campaigns, and Slow Fashion Month), SUCfree (single-use cup free) Whakatipu, and the development of a digital hub to house resources.

Role Overview
As Chairperson, you will provide leadership to their Board of Trustees, ensuring effective governance and helping set the strategic direction of the charity. You will work closely with the EO, fellow Trustees, and contractors to ensure the charity achieves its mission and continues to deliver impactful services to Queenstown Lakes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the Board of Trustees in governance and strategic decision-making.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive environment for Board members and wider team.
  • Represent Sustainable Queenstown to external stakeholders, including donors, partners, and the public.
  • Support fundraising initiatives and build relationships with key supporters.
  • Ensure the charity is complying with all legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage and lead bi-monthly board meetings (4th Wednesday evening of every other month) and annual AGMs.

Requirements

Ideally, you're someone with:

  • A passion for environmental sustainability, particularly in the waste reduction space.
  • Previous leadership experience, ideally in a nonprofit or similar organisation.
  • Excellent strategic thinking and decision-making skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in governance and working with boards.
  • Fundraising experience is an advantage.

Time commitment

You will have approx. 6-8 hours per month available for this role and be available for the bi-monthly board meetings (4th Wednesday evening of every other month) and annual AGMs.
