Alzheimers Otago provide support, education, information and related services directly to members of their communities (family, friends and whanāu) who are affected by dementia with volunteers supporting the various programmes they run. They facilitate a 7 week Cognitive Stimulation Therapy Program called Minds in Motion and a subsequent fortnightly Maintenance Group for people with mild to moderate dementia.

These gatherings allow members to:

  • socialise and connect with others going through similar challenges
  • gain valuable peer support
  • engage in cognitive stimulating activities

They also allow for some respite for their care partners.

Your role may involve:

  • helping with tea/coffee/lunch set up and clean up
  • facilitating conversation amongst members
  • sharing your talents
  • leading a session on a topic of interest for you

The ways in which you might be able to support are limited only to your imagination. You will be provided with a Volunteer Pack and have the option of learning about dementia and interventions, and receiving some basic training.
