Area Councillor – Southern Area Council

New Zealand Red Cross Area Councils lead, coordinate and nurture their organisation and their humanitarian activities across areas of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Area Councillors support Red Cross people in their Area, helping to motivate, inspire, and empower them to carry out their humanitarian work. The Southern Area covers the Southland and Otago regions. Red Cross are actively seeking someone who has a diverse background, skills and experience. This can range from leadership and governance to lived experience of humanitarian work.

The Southern Area are seeking applicants from the Queenstown and Invercargill districts to put their name forward in the upcoming New Zealand Red Cross Area Council election 2025.

The Area Councillor:

  • Contributes to the work of the Area Council to deliver positive and stable leadership that strengthens and protects New Zealand Red Cross in the Area.
  • Providing support to the Area Chair, acts as a key connector to empower Branches, Groups, and members (including those who volunteer their time) to plan and deliver activities in alignment with New Zealand Red Cross’ strategic priorities.
  • Modelling New Zealand Red Cross values and the Fundamental Principles, plays a pivotal role in fostering collaborative relationships with key stakeholders, taking the initiative to drive a one-team culture that encourages inclusion, connectedness and diverse member participation that fulfils the mission of New Zealand Red Cross.
  • Nurtures and sustains strong membership, provides sound advice, identifies ideas for improvement to support the development of members and services across the Area.
  • Strives to champion the youth voice through inspiring leadership that supports and develops young humanitarians, ensuring that New Zealand Red Cross is well placed and strengthened for the future.

Requirements

  • Diverse background, skills and experience. This can range from leadership and governance to lived experience of humanitarian work.
  • NZ Police Vetting.
  • Minimum age 18 years.
  • Two character references.
  • The nomination period for the election is from 15th February to 17th March.
  • Applications from individuals who are joining the Red Cross for the first time are open until 10th of March.
  • Once you submit your application, Red Cross will support you through the due diligence processes and other steps.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

  • 4-8 hours of training/induction.
  • A monthly meeting for Area Council members.
  • Flexible - voluntary involvement in events and community programmes.
