Cromwell Community Patrol is one of 170 community patrols affiliated to the national organisation Community Patrols of New Zealand (CPNZ). Their vision is for ‘A New Zealand where everyone feels safe’. In partnership with others, they reduce crime and harm through the active presence of trained patrollers.

CPNZ volunteer Patrollers are the extra ‘eyes and ears’ of NZ Police. Working together patrollers assist police and other agencies to reduce crime and build safer local communities. CPNZ works closely with NZ Police through a Memorandum of Understanding which enable patrols to receive regular Police guidance, training and taskings.

The Cromwell Community Patrol provides regular crime prevention vehicle patrols around Cromwell.

As a Community Patroller you will:

  • work alongside another patroller in the Community Patrol car.
  • be part of a flexible roster system to carry out patrols.
  • patrol residential, business and industrial areas, schools, parks, and reserves around Cromwell.
  • be the ‘Eyes and Ears for the Police’, observing and reporting concerns/incidents to Police Comms.
  • occasionally provide support to police activities.
  • complete records of areas patrolled and observations made during your shift.

Training and Support provided:

  • National CPNZ training including a simple online open book assessment (approximately 2
    hours).
  • Practical training provided by local experienced patrollers, including going out to observe, before being rostered to a patrol.
  • Training in observation, reporting and communicating information.
  • Regular training at bi-monthly patrol meetings.
  • Basic First Aid training is available.
  • On-going support and mentoring by experienced patrollers.
  • CPNZ polo shirt, cap, hi vis vest, and ID lanyard are provided.

Requirements

  • The desire to reduce crime and help build a safer community.
  • Keen observation skills and the ability to take notes.
  • A team-player with effective interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
  • Clean drivers’ license and good health.
  • Referees may be required.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

  • 2 hours initial online training.
  • Ideally complete 1 patrol of around 3 hours (flexible) each month, usually on a Friday or Saturday evening (flexible).
  • Attend a bi-monthly meeting for updates and training.
