Do you have a knack for organising, great people skills, or a passion for your community? This is your chance to take the lead on one of the most meaningful days of the year. Daffodil Day is the Cancer Society’s largest annual fundraiser - and they need people like you to help bring it to life in the areas of Gore (2 x 2IC), Tokanui (Area Coordinator & 2IC), Tuatapere (Area Coordinator) and Otautau (Area Coordinator).

You’ll be key to making it all happen. You’ll help organise volunteers, manage resources, and support local collection efforts in the lead-up to 29 August, then help lead the team on the big day. Some locations do run differently and do a Quiz night, bake sale etc. It’s also a fantastic opportunity to gain hands-on experience in event coordination and the not-for-profit sector - perfect for building your CV while giving back. Each area runs a bit different to suit the community.

Three Area Coordinators and three 2ICs are needed overall, and each area run different types of local events.

  • Tokanui need an Area coordinator and one 2IC to run a pub quiz
  • Gore need 2 x 2ICs to help the Area Coordinator Sandy
  • Otautau need one Area Coordinator to run a quiz night
  • Tuatapere need one Area Coordinator to run a quiz night

In this role, you’ll be:

  • Working with businesses and organisations in the lead up to Daffodil Day to promote event
  • Organising collection sites and liaising with existing volunteer collectors
  • Managing monies received (collection buckets/pre-sales/counter boxes)
  • Managing resources and merchandise
  • Implementing established systems with existing partners
  • Identifying new opportunities in the local community
  • Attending the Daffodil Day debrief/planning meetings where applicable

Daffodil Day is the Cancer Society's biggest fundraising event and the funds raised in the lead up to and on the day itself help to reduce the impact and incidence of cancer through a range of activities such as funding research, education, advocacy and support for those affected by cancer and their whānau.

Requirements

  • Ability to work comfortably alongside people from varying social, religious and cultural backgrounds
  • Clear verbal/written communication skills
  • Organised and detail-oriented, great at problem solving
  • Confident to network across all community stakeholders ( i.e. local businesses, community groups, schools, education providers and media)
  • Commitment to following national and divisional Daffodil Day standards & complying with relevant policies & procedures
  • Ability to create a fun and vibrant event tailored for your community

A Ministry of Justice background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

Hours will vary based on your own availability but below is an indication of what might be required:

  • June/July: 2-6 hours, Training and communication
  • August: 5-10 hours (including a full day on Daffodil Day, 29th August - approx 8hrs). These hours can vary depending on your availability, the number of people in your team, and the elements of Daffodil Day you activate in your community, eg. Tokanui run a pub quiz, Otautau run a quiz night.
  • Debriefing activities: 2- 6 hours
