KiwiHarvest reduces the negative impacts of food waste on our environment by redistributing excess food; helping to create lasting positive social change by nourishing those in need. By providing food support to the community, they enable people to live an independent life.

Starting Summer 2025, KIwiHarvest are looking to launch a e-bike collection form Wanaka CBD cafe donors following on from the success of their e-bike routes in Queenstown CBD and Frankton. At this stage, they are looking for expressions of interest.

How it works:

  • Enjoy a couple of hours in the morning riding around cafes and bakeries in Wanaka CBD.
  • Collect the bike from the depot at Paetara council building, along with safety gear if needed (you can bring your own helmet if preferred).
  • You'll be given a run-sheet which tells you which cafes to visit and what Wanaka charity to drop the food off at.
  • The bike will have built-in storage for the food.
  • After completing collections from the cafes you will bring the food to the selected Wanaka charity on that day.
  • Remove all food from containers, clean them and return everything to the depot ready to be used by the next rider later in the week.

Why volunteers enjoy this role:

  • It’s an E-bike so any small hills will be a breeze and it’s a fun way to get outdoors and be involved in a worthwhile community cause.
  • Usually, the run takes around 1.5/2 hours to complete so whether it’s on your break, you have a late start or its your day off, you’ll have plenty of time left to get on with the rest of your day, feeling good after your good deed!
  • You'll be given a full induction in the process prior to your first shift, and learn all about KiwiHarvest's amazing mahi.
  • You'll enjoy being part of a team of legends.
  • You'll experience the joy of delivering food to people and charities who are full of gratitude!

Requirements

  • Should be fit enough and comfortable riding e-bike for the duration - initial training provided at first meeting and sign off. No heavy lifting involved.
  • In adverse weather they ask you to try to complete route with own car if possible.

Time commitment

  • Looking to commit to one shift every second week on a Monday or Wednesday or Friday between 9am and 12 noon.
  • You would be teaming up with another volunteer who will cover the same day on alternate weeks.
  • Between you both, KiwiHarvest ask you try cover any times the other maybe sick or away on holidays if possible just to give that consistency needed to their donors and recipients where possible.
