Dunedin Riding for the Disabled provides therapeutic horse riding and horse care that supports people with disabilities to build confidence, independence, and wellbeing. Through meaningful interaction with horses, they help riders improve their health and take part more fully in their communities.

They are looking for a Health and Safety Officer to keep their current system up to date and ensure they remain compliant with legislation and NZRDA requirements.

In this role you will:

  • Be a friendly champion for everyone’s health, safety, and wellbeing.
  • Help coaches and volunteers follow safety guidelines and keep activities running safely.
  • Support reviews of the group’s Operational Certificate and safety processes.
  • Keep an eye out for hazards, do regular safety checks, and make sure risks are clearly communicated.
  • Make sure riders, volunteers, and visitors know what to do to stay safe (including pre-ride checks).
  • Help keep emergency plans up to date and make sure everyone knows what to do in an emergency.
  • Record and follow up on incidents or near-misses so we can learn and improve.
  • Help manage first aid supplies and support trained first aiders.
  • Share ideas, learn from others, and help improve safety practices across RDA.
  • Support smoke-free areas and help plan for safety-related resources and equipment.

Requirements

  • An interest in health, safety, and wellbeing
  • Good communication skills and a practical, people-focused approach
  • Confidence following guidelines and supporting others to do the same
  • Ability to notice risks and help improve safety practices
  • Comfortable keeping basic records and documentation
  • Willingness to learn and work alongside other volunteers

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

  • Initially will be a few hours/week to bring back up to date
  • But on average 1 hour per week with some additional time when annual accreditation is due
