Central Cinema is a community cinema based in the ODT Theatre at Central Stories in the heart of Alexandra.  The cinema screens current mainstream and art house movies, runs occasional film festivals and can source films requested by the community.  Central Cinema uses state of the art digital projection with excellent surround sound in a comfortable, warm and cosy environment.  Central Cinema is run entirely by volunteers and is fully self-funded.  They are passionate about what they do and believe that bringing movies to people in Central Otago is a very valuable social service. 

Films are shown at least 5 times weekly with special screenings and other events on a regular basis. Volunteers are needed for ticketing and screening duties.

In the ticketing role you would:

  • greet customers
  • sell tickets
  • sell and serve food and beverages
  • use the computer/EFTPOS system
  • balance the takings, report the figures back to a committee member

In the screening role you would:

  • operate the projector
  • follow the computer based screening process of selecting the film, initiating and closing the screening
  • help the ticketer with food and beverage if needed
  • tidy up the cinema after the show
  • secure the building after screening

Full training is provided over 3 sessions until the volunteers are confident and competent in their role. Supervision and support is available as needed.

As a volunteer you will:

  • gain satisfaction from contributing to the arts

  • hone your customer service and communication skills
  • learn about operations behind the scenes of a cinema
  • enjoy watching all the films!

Requirements

Volunteers should be a minimum 16 years old and able to relate and present well to the general public.

For the ticketing role, ideally you are:

  • a people person with a friendly manner
  • reliable and honest
  • tolerant and patient with customers
  • computer/EFTPOS savvy (training available)
  • clear with communicating any issues to committee
  • able to multitask (chat with customers while operating ticketing system, serving food etc.)

For the screening role, ideally you are:

  • a movie buff!
  • comfortable with using computer systems
  • able to follow instructions from a document
  • flexible and able to help at box office if needed

Time commitment

  • Currently need daytime shifts over school holidays to be filled
  • Ticketer/Screener roles are shared on a roster amongst about 25 volunteers.
  • 3 hours per screening, 1-3 times per month preferred
  • Minimum 6 months commitment
