Te Kākano Aotearoa Trust is a charitable organisation who have their own community-based native plant nursery. They support native habitat restoration in the Upper Clutha Basin and work with local community groups, schools, organisations & businesses in the effort to promote hands-on community land care.

As a not-for-profit trust, Te Kākano relies on the dedication of volunteers to help at the nursery and on their project sites. Their volunteers hail from all around the world and span all ages. They have support from awesome locals, tourists, youth groups, schools and businesses. Not only do they lend a helping hand each year but they leave a permanent personal mark on the Wanaka landscape for generations to come. 

How it works
The nursery is managed and run by a Nursery Manager, who will support you when you arrive! They organise 2 weekly nursery sessions with volunteers, planting sessions in autumn and winter and maintenance sessions.

How you can get involved
Volunteers play an integral part in their work and they welcome anyone interested in native habitat restoration.Tasks are varied!

  • Pricking out seedlings
  • Potting plants
  • Weeding and planting.

Requirements

  • A willingness to get involved, get your hands dirty and enjoy yourself.
  • No prior knowledge or skills required.
  • Tools provided

Time commitment

Nursery Sessions:

  • Each Tuesday and Wednesday for 3 hours
  • Ideally you can commit a minimum of 2 hours
  • 9am to 12.00pm in the spring and summer (1st Oct - 31st Mar)
  • 1pm to 4pm in the autumn and winter (1st Apr - 30th Sept)
  • Sessions are weather dependant

Planting sessions:

  • take place in autumn and winter
  • Selected Saturdays, generally 10am - 12pm
  • Location and date advertised closer to the time via website and social media, but please apply below if these are the sessions you are interested in so they can keep you in the loop
