Grans in Schools

Central Otago REAP provides educational support and assistance across all sectors including early childhood, primary, secondary and adult education.

The Grans in Schools programme connects older people in the community with the young generation resulting in fantastic social and learning outcomes for both parties. You don't have to be a grandparent yourself - the programme welcomes all older adults who enjoy spending time with young people and have time during the school day. It just takes an hour of your time each week for one term.

Grandparents spend 1 hour a week in an allocated classroom to help develop relationships with children might not have grandparents in the local area. They will be guided by the classroom teacher and will always be in the same classroom, school environment. Grandparents are matched with the same class each week for one term, enabling them to build a friendly relationship with that class and the teacher.

Grandparents gain a sense of satisfaction and reward in seeing the benefits and progress in the young people. Many grandparents not only form a relationship with the children but also get to know other grandparents.

The school and REAP provide ongoing support as well as materials and resources.
