Marathon Support Crew Superstar

The New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty Queenstown Marathon is a running festival incorporating 42km, 21km, 10km and 2.2km kids run options and is celebrating 10 years this year! Set between the backdrop of the world renowned Crown and Remarkable mountain ranges and taking in the best highlights of the Queenstown Lakes region, including Millbrook Resort, Arrowtown, Lake Hayes, Shotover River, Lake Wakatipu, and Queenstown Gardens it finishes in the heart of Queenstown itself.

Skyline Volunteers and the awesome, helpful, friendly energy they bring are what make the event an unforgettable experience. Each and every athlete hugely appreciates the amazing work done by our Skyline Volunteer Crew!

Crew roles vary from pre-event setup and registration to race day support. The Marathon team work hard to ensure that our volunteer crew have a great experience that includes:

  • the opportunity to meet new people
  • gain an insight into sports events
  • working in a fantastic team of volunteers
  • seeing your help directly benefit the wider community
  • a big warm fuzzy glow - because the event would not be possible without you!
  • Skyline Gondola Annual Pass
  • T-shirt
  • Lunch provided

Pre-event, you would be helping with:

  • Branding and finish line set-up - helping with banner mesh, signage, infrastructure & fencing to get the finish hub set up
  • Registration: Helping athletes check-in and collect their race bib & bags

On Race Day, you could help with:

  • Course marshals spread over the course from Millbrook to town, making sure athletes go the right way and provide encouragement
  • Helping with athlete bag collection post race
  • Finish line & recovery assistants (handing out medals, bananas & water)

Other important information:

  • Breaks and snacks/lunch is given depending on length of shift.
  • Each volunteer area will also have a manager/ section leader who will be your contact on the day to check in with at the start of your shift and always available to call if you have any questions.
  • Most roles will be in groups of people so there are lots of people around to help.
  • Some course marshal positions you might be on your own so make sure you have a charged mobile phone if you need to call your manager with a question.
  • A brief training is provided prior to the event as well, where you get to meet the team and receive your t-shirt!

Requirements

Volunteers from all walks of life are welcomed!

  • Would suit someone who enjoys helping in a large team
  • Reliable and respectful
  • Friendly, enthusiastic, and excited about the event
  • Some roles suit those looking to practice their English
  • Set up before the event is an outdoors, active and semi-physical role
  • Bring a backpack with water and snacks - and of course sunscreen, waterproof and hat!

Time commitment

Varied shifts available between 3 and 7 hrs long- some examples below- get in touch and we can find the right fit for you! You can choose to help everyday, or just one shift for the event.

Training:

  • Wed 13th Nov: 7-8pm Volunteer Briefing at Queenstown Events Centre, Frankton - Meet the team, get information about your role, collect event t-shirts, final instructions, ask any questions you have, meet your shift supervisor and confirm meeting points & times. If you cannot make the briefing, we will send you information by email and you can collect your t-shirt before your shift begins.

Pre-race:

  • Thu 14th Nov: Set up & signage 10am-4pm (QT rec ground)
  • Fri 15th Nov: Set up & Signage 10am-4pm (QT rec ground)
  • Fri 15th Nov: Registration at Events Centre - Options are 9.30am-3pm or 3pm-8.00pm

Race Day- Sat 16th Nov- From 5am until 5pm- lots of options available. Most shifts are around 5 hours. For example:

  • Course Marshall (various points of the course) varied shifts
  • Athlete bag pick up from 7.45am-1pm (finish line in town)
  • Recovery assistant 7am-1pm OR 10.30am- 5pm (finish line in town)
