Since 1883, The Salvation Army has fought poverty and social and spiritual distress in New Zealand. They’ve been there to help more than 120,000 families and individuals in need each year—with budgeting advice, food and clothing assistance, life skills programmes and other comfort and support. The Salvation Army are committed to our mission of caring for people, transforming lives and reforming society. They work hard to provide better options in life and a helping hand towards a brighter future for families and individuals who ask for help.

In Alexandra the services the Salvation Army provides include running the second hand retail store, food bank and community garden.

Volunteer transport assistants are required to:

  • Pick up second hand goods from peoples homes who are genuinely unable to deliver them independently.
  • Deliver unwanted second hand items to rubbish and recycling providers.
  • Lift and carry items that are sometimes heavy.
  • Interact compassionately and respectfully with customers and others.
  • Undertake this work by driving the Salvation Army van.

There are roles available to do this work within Alexandra and also a further role that requires travel to Cromwell to undertake the same work.

Volunteers can gain:

  • Enhanced interpersonal skills including communication and empathy.
  • Self satisfaction from knowing you are supporting people in need and a worthwhile cause.

Requirements

Interested volunteers need to have:

  • A current drivers licence.
  • Relatively good level of fitness to enable lifting of boxes and furniture.
  • Good communication.
  • Polite, respectful, honest, reliable manner.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

The role in Alexandra is predominantly undertaken on a Monday to accommodate weekend drop-offs.  This usually takes the morning but sometimes longer depending on the amount of material.  There is also a requirement to do this job on other days depending on demand.  They would like also like to hear from anyone with a few hours per week to spare to fill these gaps and / or be "on call".  They would ideally like a pool of people to share this work.

The role in Cromwell is undertaken 1 day per week on weekdays.  There is currently someone undertaking this but additional interest as a back-up or as a shared position would be welcomed.
