Conservation Volunteer

The Lindis Pass Conservation Group (Inc. Society) is committed to Lindis Pass Scenic Reserve, to enhancing and promoting its natural, scenic, conservation and recreational values. 

The Reserve is a subalpine to alpine snow tussock scenic reserve straddling State Highway 8 (at 971m) between Wanaka and Omarama. It is a beautiful and inspiring landscape. Volunteers often comment on how rejuvenated they feel after their workday.

Much of their work is weed control but they also undertake experimental re-vegetation research involving DOC-permitted seed collection; contract propagation via local community nurseries, and subsequent planting out and monitoring of Snow Tussock and native shrubs. Rubbish collection is an ongoing task made interesting by the array and variety of discarded material in the Pass. They also endeavour to learn about the natural and human history of the Pass, to understand its evolving ecology so that care and restoration can take place.

Lindis Pass Conservation Group was formed in December 2004 when DOC Twizel approached the Forest and Bird Society’s Upper Clutha branch, asking members to initiate a community group to do work at Lindis Pass. The LPCG Inc. is now an independent conservation group, with a varied membership of people who appreciate the need for this project, and who enjoy spending an invigorating and useful day in the high country. 

Volunteers are required to undertake:

• Weed control of woody and shrubby species (brier, lupins, broom and occasion wilding conifer) by a mix of hand loppers and Vigilant paste on cut stems, and evolving spraying methods with back packs.
• Rubbish collection runs occur as waste dictates, usually twice a season.
• Snow Tussocks and native shrubs sourced on the Pass and grown by community nurseries have been planted in 15 trial areas with good results. On a periodic basis, on 'planting days', these trial areas are being expanded in the hope of creating 'islands' of denser vegetation that will then seed out naturally.
• Seasonal monitoring of re-vegetation plots occurs visually, from photo-points, by examining and counting surviving plants, and by comparing results with the planting technique used, to learn about effective restoration.

They take a keen interest in the ecology of the Pass, and all willingness, love of landscape, expertise and experience is valued.

Volunteers will gain:

Requirements

Interested volunteers need to be/have:

• Ability to work as part of a team.
• Physically capable of undertaking work - although less labour intensive roles are also usually available.
• A passion and interest in maintaining the Lindis landscape and iconic NZ ecosystems.
• Able to get to the Lindis Pass site.  Usually meet at Tarras at 9.15 am and carpool from there.  Further carpooling from other locations may be possible depending on other attendees.

Time commitment

Workdays are scheduled monthly from spring to autumn.  Dates are usually set annually at the AGM.  They are weather dependent so are usually held on a Saturday, with Sunday set aside as a backup.  We have a pool of volunteers and you can commit to one or more workdays as fits in with your other commitments.

The role is located in the Lindis Pass but carpooling from further afield such as Queenstown, Wanaka, Cromwell or Alexandra may be possible.
