Volunteer Leader (of horses, not volunteers)

Central Otago RDA which has been in existence for over 25 years is one of 53 Member Groups throughout New Zealand. The Group provides horse riding activities to facilitate the rehabilitation of persons with disabilities whose physical and mental health is likely to benefit from such participation. Individual plans are prepared for all riders to address their needs and extend their skills.

They are offering the the opportunity to work with horses whilst enjoying the satisfaction of helping their riders. They need your help to run the riding sessions: no previous experience with horses or people with disabilities is necessary as training is given. All volunteers follow NZRDA standardised training programmes to achieve the required proficiency.

Volunteers are required to support riders by way of either leading a horse or walking beside, following directions/instructions from the duty coach. Duties include:

  • Assisting riders to get ready prior to getting on the horse. 
  • Helping to get the horse ready with the correct equipment required. 
  • Lead the horse while the rider undertakes his/her programme.
  • Walk beside each rider to assist with the riders position or helping with any equipment.

Requirements

They are looking for people who: 

  • Are able to listen and follow instructions
  • Like children and horses
  • Like working together with a team
  • Are punctual
  • Are willing to learn and are able to share ideas
  • Are reasonably fit and able to walk or jog along side a horse for short amounts of time
  • Are empathetic and have a sense of humour

Time commitment

  • Sessions are held on Tuesdays (8.30-11am) and Thursdays (8.30am-1pm) during term 1 and 4 of the academic year at the Dunstan Equestrian Centre.
  • Volunteers can volunteer for part of or for the full session.
