The New Zealand Red Cross Mission is to improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilising the power of humanity and enhancing community resilience. The Red Cross Fundamental principles guide all that they do whether they're helping people in New Zealand communities or providing relief in an international disaster.
Red Cross Invercargill Curtain Bank provides free curtains to families and individuals in the community who don't have the resources to purchase them. This service enables vulnerable people in the Southland community to not go without. Curtains are donated by members of the public then repaired, adjusted and sorted and it's all done free of charge to families in need.
With winter temperatures currently, they would like to grow their team to be able to meet higher demand and get donations out to families in need.
Currently they are looking for volunteers with availability for the following roles:
Role 1 - Sew curtains to length, make repairs, attach header tape and backing etc. There is a commercial sewing machine at the store and all materials are supplied.
Role 2 - Maintain the curtain bank store room in Invercargill so incoming donations are sorted, measured and stored on the shelves in an efficient manner
Role 3- Make up referrals according to measurements provided, coordinate with the other team members to ensure the referrals are completed in a timely manner and are suitable for the situation requested
They often find the longest drop curtains are hard to source since old houses with tall windows make up the highest demand. They have been generously supported by donations from the community and have need of volunteers with day time ability who would like to maintain the store and keep it organised, as well as sewing enthusiasts to make up curtains from donated material.
Role 1 - Ability to sew, or interest in learning. If working from Curtain Bank, no requirement for own gear but would need availability during business hours of the shop. If unavailable at that time, at coordinator's discretion it may be possible to take materials to work on at home however you would need to supply your own sewing machine etc.
Role 2 - Familiarity or willingness to learn about different types of fabrics (thermal backing etc.), thorough, detail oriented person with ability to work independently, basic fitness requirement due to store being located upstairs and lifting sometimes heavy curtains
Role 3 - Working in conjunction with store team, availability during business hours to make up referrals on an as-needed basis when they come through, ability to problem solve and provide solutions when measurements don't match up exactly, ability to work independently and use discretion.
Flexible depending on your availability and interest.
Role 1 - Sewing curtains - can either be done during business hours at the Curtain Bank store, or homework taken home and returned when completed
Role 2 and 3 - Require availability during business hours (9am - 5pm, Mon - Fri and Saturday 10-3.30pm).
There is a small, tight-knit team to support you across each role, ability to volunteer as often as you like.
The first step is to express your interest by filling out the form below. We will then put you in touch directly with the organisation for more information on the role and how to proceed.
