Curtain Bank Volunteers

Red Cross Invercargill Curtain Bank provides free curtains to families and individuals in the community who don't have the resources to purchase them. This service enables vulnerable people in the Southland community to not go without. Curtains are donated by members of the public then repaired, adjusted and sorted and it's all done free of charge to families in need.

Currently we are looking for volunteers with availability for the following roles:
Role 1 - Sew curtains to length, make repairs, attach header tape and backing etc. There is a commercial sewing machine at the store and all materials are supplied.
Role 2 - Help to maintain our curtain bank store room in Invercargill by sorting, measuring and storing incoming donations on the shelves
Role 3- Make up referrals according to measurements provided, coordinate with the other team members to ensure the referrals are completed in a timely manner and are suitable for the situation requested

Requirements

Role 1 - Ability to sew, or interest in learning. If working from Curtain Bank, no requirement for own gear but would need availability during business hours of the shop. If unavailable at that time, at coordinator's discretion it may be possible to take materials to work on at home however you would need to supply your own sewing machine etc.
Role 2 - Ability to work independently, basic fitness requirement due to store being located upstairs and lifting sometimes heavy curtains
Role 3 - Availability during business hours to make up referrals on an as-needed basis when they come through, ability to problem solve and provide solutions when measurements don't match up exactly, ability to work independently and use discretion.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

Flexible depending on your availability and interest.
Role 1 - Sewing curtains - can either be done during business hours at the Curtain Bank store, or homework taken home and returned when completed
Role 2 and 3 - Require availability during business hours (9am - 5pm, Mon - Fri and Saturday 10-3.30pm).
There is a small, tight-knit team to support you across each role, ability to volunteer as often as you like.
