The Otago Community Hospice has to raise $2.5 million each year to maintain its service across Otago – ensuring that anyone needing specialist palliative care gets that care no matter where they live, no matter what illness they have, no matter what their age.
Their volunteers are a crucial part of the Hospice service equation – with a contribution worth $800,000 each year. On any given week, they have 245 volunteers helping us out across 723 work hours. Without these volunteers – right across the Otago region – Hospice could not do what it does.
Volunteers are needed in the new (and bigger) Alexandra Hospice Shop at 13 Ennis Street to ensure the goods donated are sorted, put out and sold efficiently. They have a minimum of 3 volunteers (and a Manager) on shift at any time.
Otago Community Hospice takes pride in ensuring they look after our volunteers. They want their volunteers to have valuable and rewarding experiences with us; that means ensuring each and every volunteer is effectively inducted into their role with the Hospice. They also celebrate their volunteer workforce throughout the year with regular newsletters, their annual Christmas dinner and mid-winter social events. They have dedicated staff who provide ongoing support, training and education for the volunteers.
