Every day, an average of nine New Zealanders turn to Blind Low Vision NZ for support with vision loss. A quarter of those they assist are blind and the rest have low vision. They provide emotional and practical support with day-to-day tasks that people who are blind, deafblind or have low vision find challenging, so that they can continue working and living indpendently.
Help their members by reading parts of the local newspaper and other publications for the Telephone Information Service. This service is accessed by members on their telephones so they can listen to what's in the papers and going on in their region.
If you've answered yes to the above, you're exactly who they're looking for!
You will be given training via an online induction modules, which you can complete in your own time, and takes about 2 hours. (Includes Mandatory Compliance Courses: Health and Safety for Team Members, Privacy Act 2020, An Introduction and History of BLVNZ, Our Mission and Values)
Narrators make a world of difference to those who are blind or experience low vision, as they support them to participate in the community by staying up to date with current events. Volunteers will also gain an insight into the work of Blind Low Vision and, we hope, gain satisfaction from supporting their work. This role is something you can do autonomously and in the privacy of your own home
