Heritage Festival are seeking new Committee members to plan the celebration of Oamaru's diverse heritage and unique Victorian architecture. Their Committee showcases the heritage and social history of Oamaru and the Waitaki District through the iconic annual Victorian Heritage Celebrations. The events are largely held in the Victorian streetscapes of the Heritage Precinct and re-imagine 19th century New Zealand.
The Committee organises 6 core events for the Celebrations, including the Garden Party, traditional Morning Tea, Street Parade, Fashion Show and Old-Time Dance. Many other events are run by community groups, and OVHC develops the full programme, then promotes and advertises the Celebrations as a whole.
How can you get involved? Heritage Festival has two types of roles:
Committee Officer:
- Attend meetings every 2-4 weeks (as needed) between February and November
- Brainstorm ideas with the team for refreshing the annual programme
- Liaise with associated groups to share information as needed
- If it interests you, you could lead the planning and delivery of an event
- Liaise with a specific group (e.g. schools, businesses, Council) to share information on the Celebrations
- Shape the role to suits your skills and interests
Casual Volunteers are welcome to offer a few hours of time around the Celebrations, to assist with an event.
Tasks could include:
- Picking up/delivering items for an event
- Helping to shift seating or equipment
- Welcoming guests
- Taking tickets
- Distributing flyers and brochures around Oamaru
- Serving tea, etc
Volunteers will gain:
- Heritage Event planning experience
- The ability to contribute and learn alongside a fun and experienced team
- The opportunity to keep an important part of Aotearoa New Zealand's diverse heritage alive
Requirements
For all of the above roles, ideally you are someone who:
- Has a genuine interest in Oamaru Heritage and making the Celebrations a success!
- Enjoys being part of a diverse team
- Keen to contribute to wider discussions around the goals of the organisation
As an Officer, you would ideally:
- Participate in planning the programme, and deliver on tasks as agreed
- Contribute to discussions on strategic goals and long-term planning
- Be willing to share your knowledge and contacts to support the Celebrations
As a Heritage Event Volunteer, you would ideally:
- Be available to assist with an event, as agreed with the event organiser
- Perform physical tasks related to the setup, running and pack down of event equipment
(Taks may inlcude: standing for long periods of time, sitting, lifting, kneeling, carrying, bending, pivoting, interacting with the public and following instructions)
- Where a task requires physical fitness, work with a team and follow the event’s Health and Safety Plan
Time commitment
Time commitment varies depending on the time of year:
- The Committee meets every 2-4 weeks, as needed, from February to November
- Meetings last up to 90 minutes
- Additional work in between meetings is expected to take approximately 4 hours a month on average
- Time commitment for Event Volunteers will be confirmed closer to the date
- Pre-event information and event orientation time TBC
