Blind Low Vision NZ (formerly The Blind Foundation) is New Zealand's main provider of practical and emotional support for the 14,000 kiwis who are blind or have low vision, enabling them to face their future with confidence, be self reliant and live the life they choose.

Invercargill BLVNZ community are looking for people to:

  • Support members to keep active and healthy by walking
  • Enjoying sharing the great outdoors and keeping fit at the same time
  • Provide 1 hour in-person Human Guiding weekly
  • Provide friendly, supportive conversation

Not only will you be providing vital support to someone who is blind or experiences low vision, through walking, but you will be making a real difference to someone's life by providing friendly conversation in a family like environment.

Requirements

If this sounds like you and you would like to share your time and skills then you'll need:

  • To complete the online induction
  • An interest in supporting people
  • To be physically fit
  • Friendly and patient
  • Respect confidentiality
  • Enthusiasm about supporting BLVNZ members to be self-reliant and participate in community activities
  • Police background check (provided)

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

  • Induction: 1-2 hours (can be completed over a period of time)
  • Human Guiding (in-person) 1 hour
  • The walking group is for around 2 hours weekly. Includes meeting up and coffee time.
