Hospital Friend

Hato Hone St John’s mission is to enhance the health and well-being of people of all races and creeds across Aotearoa New Zealand. St John is a charitable organisation with a strong volunteer ethos. St. John operates independently of Government and business, and serves communities throughout New Zealand by delivering an extensive range of services in many health-related fields including emergency response, medical shuttles and supporting people at different stages of their health journey.

They are currently looking for new Hospital Friends in Oamaru and Queenstown.

The role requires people to:

  • Provide comfort and support to patients, and their families, in a hospital context.
  • Have an aptitude for working with people from a diversity of cultures and backgrounds.
  • Bring compassion to Hato Hone St John Hospital's crucial function of Community Carer service.
  • Provide conversational support to patients, and their families, in a hospitals.
  • Complete full training (a uniform and ongoing staff support are provided).
    (Volunteers receive Hato Hone St John membership (free ambulance service for yourself and your immediate family)

In times of distress, people need more than treatment, they also need support. And because hospitals are often busy, volunteers can assist staff by providing support and reassurance to patients and their their families. That’s how Hato Hone St John Hospital Friends can make a real difference.

Requirements

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Sensitivity towards those who are sick.
  • A friendly, caring and compassionate nature.
  • Physically fit (these roles involve a lot of walking within the hospital).
  • The ability to sit with, listen to and talk with patients.
  • A genuine interest in the well-being of others.
  • You must be at least 18 years of age.

A Ministry of Justice background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

  • Able to commit to at least one four-hour shift weekly or fortnightly.
  • Shifts vary between hospitals and care facilities.
  • Volunteers who are able to commit to a minimum of 12 months.
