Immigration Advisor

Queenstown CAB is an independent community service that offers information, advice and advocacy to members of the public on such varied topics as consumer, education, employment, financial matters, health and welfare, housing, legal issues, general information, personal and family issues, transport, travel and immigration. The CAB is a champion of people’s rights, working to solve the underlying causes of the problems they face. They think it is important that everyone in New Zealand can participate in their community and access the services they need.

Every week, they run an immigration clinic that provides advice and support to migrants in the community, who may not have the financial capacity to engage paid services. Currently, one of their Immigration Advisors is on extended leave, and they are seeking support to cover these shifts at the clinics.

How it works:

  • When someone comes in looking for help with immigration issues, the CAB volunteer interviewers conduct the initial meeting
  • The CAB interviewer will collect the necessary information and compile notes
  • The person seeking support will be given an appointment during clinic hours
  • These notes will be passed on to you, the volunteer Immigration Advisor to then provide support during the appointment

Recently, the clinics have been busy and there is a consistent need in the Queenstown community for immigration advice. Many in the local migrant community are unable to afford other channels to access this advice, and this is where your expertise can make a huge difference to those facing genuine challenges.

Requirements

  • Licensed Immigration Advisor
  • Empathetic and open-minded personality
  • Genuine interest in helping local migrants

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

  • Clinics are weekly, and they have one other advisor, so ideally you would cover once a fortnight.
  • The time for the clinic can be set according to what works best for you, within CAB operating hours.
  • Usually 3 appointments of 45 mins each, but this can also be flexible depending on your availability
  • While the current need is short term, they are always open to long term commitment if you are keen!
