Whanau Awhina Plunket is a non-profit national organisation whose people are passionately committed to the well-being of children and their families. Plunket support families to ensure children reach their full potential in the first 5 years of life. Services available include parenting advice and support, child health promotion and health education.

"Heuristic Play is an enriching type of play where babies and young children interact with everyday objects, rather than toys." The goal of heuristic play is for children to explore different textures and different types of objects to stimulate their senses and learn through discovery. Parents accompany children during the group so they can observe them and understand what stimulates them the most.

How you would be involved:

  • Help set up the playgroup - clear a space and lay items out
  • Be an extra pair of eyes on kids as they play
  • Help the staff member run the group smoothly as they transition between different types of play
  • Enjoy chatting with the parents during the session
  • If you have any ideas on different kinds of texture based play, you are welcome to lead a section of the group!
  • Help with a quick pack down of items after the group finishes

Not only will you enjoy observing the children as they explore and have fun with everyday objects, but also the fulfilment of supporting young parents in the community by facilitating this experience, therefore contributing to the wellbeing of young families!

Requirements

  • Have a genuine interest in early childhood development
  • Enjoy connecting with young families in the community
  • Be able to sit/get up comfortably on the floor

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

Group runs from 10am - 11am, every other Thursday, so would need to arrive by 9:30am for set up, and stay until 11:30am or so to help with pack down.
