Central Otago Search and Rescue are part of the national volunteer organisation LandSAR who provide search and rescue services for the region. They are currently looking for at least one more admin support volunteer to join their team.

In this role, you will provide vital support to the Incident Management Team and the deployed field teams during a search and rescue operation by helping with processes in the office which are essential to operations moving smoothly.

Admin support services mainly include:

  • Computer and data management
  • Use of base radios and logging communications
  • Collating information
  • Issuing of equipment

Occasionally, you might also

  • Add information to mapping programmes
  • Organise transport
  • Organising volunteer replacements
  • Organise extra gear and meals for SAR team

Requirements

Tasks will vary. You do not require a level of fitness or in-depth knowledge of the outdoors.

The ideal volunteer will have:

  • Some level of computer literacy
  • An eye for detail
  • Logical yet diverse thinking
  • Flexibility
  • Ability to work under pressure

Location:

  • If available, you may need to report to operations centres in Alexandra, Cromwell or elsewhere in the Central Otago region depending on the duration of the search. Own transport is required.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

Training:

  • The frequency and duration of training varies, but as a general rule the Admin Support unit will train on the third Wednesday of the month
  • Field teams train the first Wednesday of each month, and a couple of weekends a year.
  • Admin support will be needed during some field team training. This a good opportunity for you to get to know the wider team and for them to get to know you.

Once Trained:

  • Admin Support volunteers are 'on call' to support search and rescue operations.
  • This means you could be called upon to assist at any time of the day or night, and you respond if you are available.
  • Volunteers’ families, whānau, and employers should all be comfortable with this possibility
  • Duration of support required will vary with each operation.
