Music and Movement Activity Programme Helper

Alzheimers Otago provides support, education, information and related services directly to members of their communities (family, friends and whanāu) who are affected by dementia with volunteers supporting the various programmes they run.

The Music and Movement programme for people living with dementia in the community was trialled in 2023 and showed significant benefits for participants. Your role may involve:

  • assisting our musical therapist with music and movement activities
  • sharing your musical talents
  • helping with tea/coffee set up and clean up
  • facilitating conversation amongst members

  • socialise and connect with others going through similar challenges
  • gain valuable peer support
  • engage in varied musical, creative and exercise activities to support cognitive and physical function, and to improve wellbeing.
  • allow for some respite for their care partners.

Volunteers also build strong supportive relationships with group members providing significant satisfaction in knowing that they have made a difference in someone's life. There is scope for developing within your role in future programmes, if you wish to go on this path.
