Every day New Zealanders turn to Blind Low Vision NZ for support with vision loss. BLV provide emotional and practical support with day-to-day tasks that people who are blind, deafblind or have low vision find challenging, so that they can continue working and living independently. The Invercargill Blind Low Vision Bowling group are looking for additional support volunteers for their Wednesday afternoon practice session.

As an Indoor Bowls Assistant you will be:

  • Learning techniques on how bowls can be adapted for blind and low vision players
  • Assisting the players to achieve their recreational goals
  • Working alongside others
  • A volunteer who ideally has some bowling experience - less experienced volunteers may also be considered
  • Performing tasks that include helping to set up equipment and assist members while playing
  • Participating in the end of session afternoon tea
  • Meeting with the group at the Blind Low Vision Centre in Invercargill for a 2 hour session every Wednesday

Training Provided:

  • You will be provided with a 1-2 hour Induction to the organisation

Requirements

  • Ideally have previous experience and a love of bowling
  • Previous experience supporting others is an advantage
  • Personable, patient and engaging
  • Be able to work with people of all abilities and backgrounds in a supportive way
  • Complete the BLVs initial induction training

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

  • Meeting with the group at the Blind Low Vision Centre in Invercargill
  • The group runs for 2 hours every Wednesday from 1:30pm - 3:30pm at the Invercargill Branch of Blind Low Vision
  • Involves a 1 hour session with 30 mins either side for team setup/tidy-up & occasional liaison with BLV Volunteer Coordinator
