Exhibition Installation Crew

Te Atamira is a multi-purpose, community-oriented arts and cultural space in the heart of the Whakatipu region. They offer a wide-ranging programme of exhibitions, workshops, classes, performances, events and talks designed for everyone to be creative, every day. Te Atamira Volunteer Ambassadors will lend their time and energy to support and promote these programmes, making a difference and celebrating the arts in the local community.

As an Exhibition Installation Ambassador, you will:

  • Assist with unpacking and organizing artworks upon arrival (you get the first look!)
  • Help prepare the gallery space for installations, including cleaning and setting up display materials.
  • Work with the Te Atamira team to understand the layout and installation plan.

There are a variety of tasks this role could include.

Handling Artwork

  • Carefully handling and transporting artworks within Te Atamira
  • Assisting with tasks like hanging paintings, mounting sculptures, and setting up multimedia equipment.
  • Using tools and equipment to secure artworks according to the installation and health and safety plans.

Labeling and Documentation

  • Help create and place labels and signage for artworks.
  • Assist with the documentation of the installation process, including photographing and recording the placement of artworks.

Maintenance and Monitoring

  • Ensure the gallery space remains clean and organized during the installation process.
  • Assist with making minor repairs or adjustments to displays as needed.
  • Monitor the condition of artworks and report any issues to Te Atamira team

Event Support

  • Assist with the setup and pack down of exhibition openings and related events.
  • Provide information to visitors about the installation process and artworks during events.
  • Help manage crowds and ensure the safety of the artworks during public events.

Training on art handling and installation techniques will be provided along with guidance on the specific exhibition and gallery setup. You will also have ongoing support from the Te Atamira team throughout your shift.

Requirements

This role would suit someone who has:

  • Interest in art and exhibition design.
  • Strong attention to detail and a careful approach to handling artworks.
  • Basic knowledge of tools and equipment used in art installation.
  • Good physical condition, able to lift and move heavy objects.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and work as part of a team.

Preferred but not required experience includes:

  • Previous experience in art handling, installation, or gallery work.
  • Familiarity with art materials and conservation practices.
  • Experience working in a team setting, particularly in a volunteer or arts environment.

Time commitment

  • Frequency of installations will vary, could be bi-monthly with additional opportunities available
  • Approximately 3-4 Hours at a time over 2 days of install
  • Longer shifts may be available
