The Community Seed Library is located in the Wānaka Library and is open to all.
What is a seed library?
- People can borrow seeds to plant in their garden, with the intention to bring back seeds from whatever they manage to grow!
- It operates on a 'Borrow - Grow - Return' basis, operating during Spring, Summer and Autumn.
- It provides a means for the community to share seeds from homegrown produce, flowers and herbs.
- It offers diversity in what people can grow, access to free seeds, seeds that are known to thrive in our climate and the chance to try something new.
As a volunteer you will:
- Check the seed library has stock and is tidy.
- Sort and label seeds into individual packets ready for borrowing
- Restock any printed resources that sit alongside the seed library.
- Report back to library staff if there are any issues or needs identified.
If you have an interest in sustainability or growing your own food, go along and support this wonderful community initiative that helps people learn more about this practice. An induction will be provided prior to starting your shifts, going over the operation of the seed library.

The role would suit you if you have a keen interest in gardening or learning about seed saving and growing food, and have an eye for organisation and detail.
Time commitment
- Allow 30 minutes - 1 hour of your time per week, anytime within library open hours Mon-Sat.
