St Andrew's Anglican Church with funding from Central Lakes Trust provides aged-care support in the Cromwell Community. Their key goals are to support the two Cromwell rest homes in giving pastoral, emotional and where appropriate spiritual care; visit any isolated and lonely folk in the Cromwell Community; and establish other initiatives to bring stimulation to the lives of our aged-care folk.

Their Aged-Care Support Lead Worker is supported by a small but growing team of volunteers to provide a variety of programmes at the rest homes, Cromwell Library, in people's homes and at the Anglican Church and Hall. The more people they have assisting, the more aged-care folk they can reach out to.

The Aged-Care Support team liaise with Cromwell Library to support a dementia-friendly book chat group called, 'Tea and Tales', held every Tuesday from 2-3pm at Cromwell Library. This is a socially safe activity for folk with fading memories due to head injuries and/or dementia. If you love reading out loud and have a love of books, this may be the role you are looking for - reading specially designed books and other appropriate reading material for people with fading memories.

As part of the Tea and Tales team you will:

  • Read with the support of another reader in the group, helping with responses.
  • Enjoy a cuppa and biscuits the lovely Librarians supply.
  • Have fun supporting a small group of folk with fading memories discuss a book.
  • Hear laughter and lots of responding from the participants and the readers.
  • As you get the feel of the group, you will find you can recommend other books or poems that are ideal for this group of friendly adults.
  • Receive training by observing, reading as you feel ready, and learning how to talk in a dementia-friendly way with training from their Lead Support Worker and other experts at times set for your convenience.

Requirements

  • Love of the elderly and an eagerness to listen so they talk.
  • A willingness to upskill your listening and discussion skills; and to learn how to approach and talk to people with fading memories.
  • Smiley, friendly, and empathetic.
  • Confidentiality is paramount; a willingness to be Police Vetted; and to follow Health and Safety procedures are 'must-dos'.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

  • Tuesdays, 2.00-3.00pm with 15 minutes either side for arrival and finishing off.
  • If you need to be away - this can be worked around with other volunteers as we work as a team.
