Te Kākano Aotearoa Trust is a charitable organisation who have their own community-based native plant nursery. They support native habitat restoration in the Upper Clutha Basin and work with local community groups, schools, organisations & businesses in the effort to promote hands-on community land care.

As a not-for-profit trust, Te Kākano relies on the dedication of volunteers to help at the nursery and on their project sites. Their volunteers hail from all around the world and span all ages. Not only do they lend a helping hand each year but they leave a permanent personal mark on the Wanaka landscape for generations to come.

How you can get involved

  • From April to September, Te Kākano organises community native tree planting sessions with the community.
  • From November to March, they organise a watering schedule to help the plants get some much needed water.
  • Depending on your availability, you will be allocated one or several sites and one or several weeks of watering.
  • Someone from the team will meet with you at the site that works best for your location and show you the ropes.

Requirements

  • Enjoying being outside!
  • Being able to walk around plants to water them.
  • Wearing weather and outdoor appropriate clothing and shoes

Time commitment

It will depend on the amount of time you have. 1-2 hours/week for one week to several weeks - up to you!
