SuperSkills Central Otago REAP empowers individuals, whanau, and communities through grassroots knowledge. Previously known as SuperGrans, they are one of 11 agencies across Aotearoa.
SuperSkills volunteers are here to support families of all ages to develop new skills and form relationships and connections in the community. So many families do not have the benefit of having family / whanau support on their doorstep. SuperSkills / Super Grans wants to fill that gap.
As a SuperPerson you may be:
- Offering advice with household tasks - cooking, establishing routines, helping out when Mum has an appointment,
- Helping a parent or child to learn to knit, sew or another craft.
- Helping the family to set up their vegetable garden.
- Building confidence with budgeting, shopping and meal planning and preparation.
- Helping new families to our town, getting to know our town - walkabouts, introductions to sports, coffee groups, craft groups, parks, safe biking, walking or swimming places. This may include welcoming and supporting new migrant families.
- Helping families to make connections with locals, as well as other newcomers, of all ages.
- Going along to fortnightly coffee mornings for meet and greet, and to assist with small workshops.
- Supporting family related community events such as children’s clothing exchange, toy swaps.
SuperSkills volunteers can work with a small group or individually. They work in homes or in an arranged venue, depending on the individual needs or their client family.
In this role you:
- Can choose to work individually or with another SuperPerson as you support families.
- Will be matched with a family and will be involved in developing an action plan based on a needs assessment.
- Can decide on the amount of time that you are able to give. Generally this would be 1-2 hours per week.
- Will use the skills that you already have, as well as your experience, to help our families, but you will also be given the opportunity to develop more skills and make more connections for yourself.
- Can attend regular team meetings with other volunteers to discuss successes as well as challenges, and work together to find solutions and develop strategies to help clients to move forward confidently.
- Will be supported by the Central Otago REAP SuperSkills co-ordinator, and the wider Central Otago REAP team.
