Lake Hawea Community Centre is owned by its community. It relies solely on fundraising and community volunteers to keep it growing and accessible to all in our community. In recent times, the Centre's operations have grown steadily, and they have decided to restructure their committee to be more sustainable and carry on creating an impact in the community. They are keen to bring on new members to the Executive Committee with fresh energy to take on the leadership from long-serving committee members. There are 2 roles available.

The Chairperson will:

  • have a clear vision of the future of the Centre and how to achieve it
  • keep abreast of and support activities of the Centre
  • help to prepare the agenda for monthly meetings
  • chair meetings
  • follow up on actions from meetings
  • support Committee Members in their roles
  • lead Governance and Management of the organisation
  • be the public face of the Committee

The Secretary will:

  • support Chairperson
  • prepare meeting agenda with Chairperson
  • keep track of key actions determined at each meeting
  • send out key communications such as meeting reminders, agenda, and minutes via email
  • keep an eye on emails and forward/share with appropriate committee members to respond
  • Updating and maintaining files on shared drive

For both roles, ideally you are interested in and available to attend a few key events at the Centre throughout the year, and this is flexible to your availability. This is a great opportunity to take on a leadership role in building community by supporting an organisation that provides a central space for connection and engagement.

There will be an induction to bring you up to speed with all the key information and processes of your role. You will be supported by other Committee Members, outreach team and enthusiastic volunteers. Support will also be available by way of linking in with training and mentoring as needed.

Requirements

Ideally you are someone with:

  • A true passion for community connection and development
  • Enjoy working with a team towards meaningful projects
  • Believe in the value of a multi-purpose shared community space
  • Experience in Governance and Leadership (Chairperson)
  • Note-taking and organisational skills (Secretary)
  • Computer Literacy (using online drives, email)
  • Positive, can-do attitude
  • Creative thinking and problem solving

A Ministry of Justice background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

  • Formal Monthly meetings - 2 hours per month
  • Other actions and preparation between meetings can vary (5 hrs per month)
