About Shakti Women's Refugee Trust:
Shakti Women’s Refuge Trust is a national organization dedicated to supporting and empowering women and children from refugee and migrant backgrounds. We provide essential services to women and children from Asian, African, and Middle Eastern communities who are experiencing domestic violence, family harm, and other forms of abuse. Their mission is to create a safe, supportive environment where women and children can regain control of their lives, heal from trauma, and thrive in their communities.
Shakti offers a range of services, including safe housing, crisis intervention, advocacy, legal support, and community development. Working alongside clients to empower them through education, connection to resources, and advocacy for their rights. Their goal is to break the cycle of violence and to help women and children create better, safer futures.
Position Overview:
The Community Facilitator will play an essential role in connecting with and educating/create awareness with Shakti’s refugee and migrant communities. The appointed facilitator will be responsible for delivering tailored programs to women in the respective community in the Dunedin, Invercargill, Christchurch, Greymouth, Queenstown, Oamaru/Timaru Region.
Key Responsibilities:
- Facilitation of Workshops: Organize and lead community base workshops, and sessions for women on topics such as Treaty of Waitangi, Cultural diversity, Employment & NZ Social structure, Family violence, Women’s health and Mental health.
- Cultural Sensitivity and Awareness: Ensure all community engagement activities and services are culturally sensitive, recognizing the diverse backgrounds of clients, including those from Asian, African, and Middle Eastern communities.
- Collaboration and Networking: Build and maintain strong relationships with local organizations, government agencies, and other service providers to provide integrated support for clients.
- Report Writing and Documentation: Prepare detailed reports on community workshops, engagement activities, and client outcomes, ensuring all information is accurately documented and complies with organizational standards and regulatory requirements.
Requirements
- A commitment to training and delivering workshops and empowerment for women and children from refugee and migrant backgrounds.
- A passion for supporting women and children, especially those from refugee and migrant backgrounds.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse communities.
- Flexibility and adaptability to volunteer varying hours based on the needs of the community and the training schedule.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Previous experience working with refugee and migrant populations in a social services or community development role is preferred.
- Fluency in one or more of the languages spoken by the communities Shakti serves is highly desirable.
- Understanding of New Zealand’s refugee resettlement programs and social services.
